Avion Ridge

This moderate hike starts at Goat Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park.

After waking up to cloudy skies, I decided to hike up Avion Ridge to Newman Peak. The trail heads up-valley from the campsite, meandering through open forest, gradually gaining altitude. There are several cliff bands that look imposing until you reach them, then the way is obvious and straight forward.

Past the cliffs the path switch backs up the red slope to gain the summit. The views down the valley are impressive.

Newman Peak is just a few minutes hiking to the north and is an easy goal. From there you have a few options. I decided to tackle the peak of Spionkop Ridge.

Walk the ridge, dropping around 100 meters, before heading back up. All the rock in this area is red and reminds me of a jig-saw puzzle. Spionkop Peak is the highest point along the ridge so it's a perfect place to stop and enjoy the views.
