This is a short hike, but if you like rocks and sand (and hot weather!) then the Valley of Fire is a great place to spend several days photographing.
From the trail head there's a slight descent before you walk around the foot of a small rock out cropping. On the other side there are countless lines in the rocks. There's a marked trail but you can basically go wherever you want, generally heading south. Within minutes you arrive at the wave, which will probably have people hanging out on it. Just wait and they'll leave or going exploring, which is what I did.
Since you're never far from the road there's not much chance of getting lost.
