With the weather looking promising, I decided to hike up Elk, Friday after work. By the time I got to the trailhead it was 6:00 pm and I knew I'd have to hustle if I wanted to get to the top for the sunset. The lower section of the trail was clear and I made good time. Once I was past the logging road, snow began to cover the ground and I slowed down to maintain my footing. As I approached the final steep section the snow was piling up so I put my snowshoes to give me traction. There was...Read Full Post »

After getting a late start from Chilliwack, Lou and I pulled off Hwy 99 and started up the Blowdown Creek FSR at about 8:00 pm. Lou babied his jetta through the water bars at a crawl and about an hour later we were at the end of the two wheel drive section, at the 10 km mark. We spent of few minutes gathering our gear together and stretching our legs before heading out in the dark.
The full moon lit up the night and it was easy going, allowing us to travel the 4 kms to the lake in...Read Full Post »

With the end of the season fast approaching, I was determined to do some more backpacking while the weather held. I posted on Clubtread but got no results until I bumped the thread back to the top. Then I got some action!
I made plans with two other hikers to spend two nights in Illal Meadows, a favourite destination of mine. I was jittery with anticipation as I packed for the trip.
One of the guys backed out when his plans changed but Alex and I were still on. T...Read Full Post »

After "discovering" the northern section of Hwy 99 last year, I was eager to explore this beautiful area.
It's a longish drive from Chilliwack, up the Fraser Canyon to Lytton, then up Hwy 12 to Lillooet. 24 kms west of Lillooet on the 99 is the turn-off for the Downton Creek FSR, and an easy 14 kms later we were at the trailhead. We were car camping this weekend and there was a great spot just past the trailhead parkinglot to set-up our tent and shelter.

High winds and zero visibility kept us from summiting Black Tusk but when the clouds cleared the views were spectacular.
Karl contacted me and suggested we hike to Black Tusk, a round trip journey of over 28 kms. I was game so Janice picked me up and we made our way from Chilliwack to North Vancouver where we hopped into Karl's car and drove to the trailhead.
This was my first time in Garibaldi and I was a bit surprised by the size of the parking lot and how full...Read Full Post »

We reached the parking lot in Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park just after 8:00 AM. Myself and 3 others ( Karl, Alyssa, and Brian ) geared-up and headed out. The initial trail through the campgrounds and along the Chilliwack River is mostly flat and we were quickly at the trailhead.

With such a stunning backdrop I knew it wouldn't be long before I was climbing the hills around Falls Lake again. When Karl mentioned he had some free time I suggested that we head to the Coquihalla Rec area and summit Zoa peak and then do some exploring along the ridge that leads to Zopkios Peak.
Due to some commitments we didn't get on our way until after lunch. Just before the parking area, the last bit of snow blocked the road. We parked there, geared up, and began ascending ...Read Full Post »

The Easter Long weekend was the perfect opportunity to spend a couple of days camping. After seeing this little bay on google earth I drove the 50kms up Harrison West FSR to see if it would be worth camping there for a couple of nights. There was a fair bit of debris from people using the area as a firing range, but it was such an idealic location that I figured we'd give it a go.
Shouldering our loaded packs, we set off. Thankfully the short trail was all down hill and we h...Read Full Post »

Leaving Chilliwack, Monday morning, the weather was looking beautiful! Lou and I planned on hiking up to Zoa Peak and doing some photography of the northern exsposures of Yak, Nak, and Thar, possibly waiting for sunset if the lighting cooperated. However, as we passed Hope I could see clouds building in the distance and by the time we were approaching the Coquihalla summit the blue skies were gone. Undaunted, we geared-up and followed a well trodden trail along the ac...Read Full Post »
